Worst books of the year | 2020

I’m sorry I haven’t been as active as I had wanted to be but I have been focusing on getting some more reading done and decompressing after the Christmas rush.

I definitely want to do an overall review of the year in terms of my reading but it has never been this close so I’ll be leaving that until the New Year where I can look over all of my challenges and other goals for the year but I thought it was only right that I do a “worst” books of the year post to end everything on!

Small disclaimer, these are books that I have personally rated low, it does not meant that they are awful books as a whole but just that they didn’t work for me.

  • Keep You Safe by Melissa Hill – The only 1 star review this year which was down purely to the absolute anti-vax drivel that works it way all the way through this book and completely contradicts itself. Not a fan.
  • Pine by Francine Toon – I really wanted to love this one, and the writing was really atmospheric but the actually plotline was missing something and I thought the ending was a little too left field.
  • The Sisters Brothers – If there was ever going to be a genre that wasn’t going to be for me this was it. I found myself bored all the way through and I would have loved a little more drama!
  • Love You Gone by Rona Halsall – I would have loved to have supported a local author but unfortunately this book was so cluttered with so much drama and none of it made a whole lot of sense which was a shame.
  • Regretting You by Colleen Hoover – Such a sad day, I have been a fan of Colleen’s work but this one fell flat for me, there was such a disconnect for me and it was a struggle.
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – I still don’t know what that the point of this book was, it was a short read but it somehow seemed to drag more than I could have imagined.
  • The Long Flight Home by Alan Hlad – I was surprised that this wasn’t one of my new favourites but everything seemed so surface level and I just really needed and wanted something more from the story.

I couldn’t even come up with 10 books to add to the list, which for me signifies a brilliant year reading! What have been some of your misses this year?

  1. I had a set of DNFs that upset me, esp Roxane Gay’s book which I wanted to love but was too upsetting and depressing without any relief or hope. I understand these are lacking in life but I need some for myself! Glad you didn’t have too many duds, though. And don’t pressure yourself on the reviewing / blogging either, we’re all still here to read you whenever!

    1. I tried to keep DNFs off the list purely because I wanted to have a fully formed opinion on them! But there were quite a few I couldn’t finish!

      Thank you xx
