I am so impressed with myself, Grasshopper Jungle was one of the books on my 2018 Must Read list, and I got two in one month! I will say Grasshopper Jungle is not for the faint-hearted. I struggled with this book, because the main character really annoyed me, but then I was so intrigued by how the story was going to end that I couldn’t put it down. That isn’t to say I will be picking it up ever again. This was definitely a one time read and it will be donated in due course.
The biggest problem with this book and the main reason I won’t be picking Grasshopper Jungle ever again is the main character, he annoyed me SO much. The way he treated his best friend and girlfriend was disgusting and I know for a fact that if any of my friends acted like that I wouldn’t have anything to do with them EVER again. I think the problem was there wasn’t any redeeming factors to his character, plus I just wasn’t a fan of how everything related back to how horny he was. I think this book would have been better if there had been another narrator.
I think the redeeming factor for Grasshopper Jungle would be the way the unique way the story unwinds and I have to say the ending is really well done. You really don’t see it coming, well I didn’t anyway. And I think that is definitely why I won’t be picking it up again, the ending was what makes this book worth it and now I know what happens I’m just not interested, so it’s the saving grace yet the main reason why I won’t be picking it up again.
I don’t know whether I would recommend Grasshopper Jungle, I definitely didn’t enjoy it and the pay off wasn’t worth the struggle it took to get there. I’m actually really disappointed because I really loved Winger and I thought that this might be on the same thread and the same level, but alas, disappointment reigns.
