Children Books We’re Loving | Emmy Time
I’m starting a new element of this blog, all about the new love of my life, Emmerson. I am desperately trying to instil a love of reading into his life, so we’re reading a lot of children books and have joined the local library. So, I thought this would be a great way to document a little bit of Emmy’s life and how being a new parent is going. I will make sure to use the tag “Emmy Time” so if it’s not your bag, completely understandable you can skip it.
So these are the children books we’re really loving at the minute for a various of reasons.
Rachel Bright

We love these books, and I am desperately trying to get my hands on a full set. What we love is the fact that each of the stories follow a different character and a different struggle. For example The Worrysaurus follows a little dinosaur struggling with anxiety, and the journey to trying to deal with it. I love in particular that there isn’t usually a nice and easy ending, there’s work that has to go into solving the issue. Emmy loves the pictures, and although he is a little young to understand the meaning behind the words but we enjoy creating a great foundation to talk about mental health and the struggles that he might face.
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

These children books are classics in their own right. I adore everything about them, before Emmy was born I knew I would want a complete collection of these books. Not only are the illustrations really eye catching but we really love the rhyming rhythm all the way through, it keeps Emmy’s attention and even makes him laugh and smile. Which for a seven month old is something amazing, especially when my child seems to only laugh or smile when someone is hurting themselves.
Benji Davies

The art style in these books is absolutely stunning, I am always looking for books which feature a different style than the usual cartoon like. Not only do we love the look of these books, we also love the way the stories are told, especially The Storm Whale. It gives us a brilliant talking point to discuss animals and where they belong with Emmy in the future. We want to expose him to as many different scenarios as possible.
Beatrix Potter

This was always going to be on our list because I grew up with these books on my shelves, I love the little world that Beatrix Potter created. I think what I love the most about these stories are the fact that the characters aren’t necessarily well-behaved. The situations are brilliantly constructed with perfect natural consequences. We love all the different animals and although Emmy is still at the stage of just enjoying the words we’re looking forward to him having favourites.
Enid Blyton

Another set of books that have been added to the list due to nostalgia. I was a huge Blyton fan when I was younger and she featured heavily in my reading journey. The amount of magic and fantasy in these books makes me SO excited for Emmy to grow up feeling that wonder. We are currently making our way through the bedtime collection and I’m loving being back in that space. I’m looking forward to adding to our collection and seeing which way Emmy decides to go, magical or mystery.
Future Children Books

We are always expanding his library with new books all the time, and one place we’re lacking is in the inclusivity department, so that’s where we’re going to be focusing on. We love buying books and exposing Emmy to books that have a great message or something that he can learn from it. If you have any suggestions we always have space on our shelves for good books.

I would love to hear what some of your favourite childhood books are and which you would recommend! I want Emmy to have a diverse library and access to all kinds of books.
