I thought that seeing as it’s been over two months since I gave you a recommendation that it was time for another one. This time we’re jumping into one of if not my favourite genre, YA Fantasy. I think there is something great about escaping completely from the world around us and into a completely fictional existence. My YA fantasy recommendation is also one of my favourite fantasy books of all time and if you also like the genre you probably won’t be shocked. So my YA fantasy recommendation is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Series: Six of Crows #1
Also in this series: Crooked Kingdom
Genres: YA, Fantasy
Published by Henry Holt and Company
Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price–and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…
A convict with a thirst for revenge.
A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager.
A runaway with a privileged past.
A spy known as the Wraith.
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.
Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.
I adore this book like if I could just read one book over and over this would definitely be on the considerations list. I love the characters and the plotline and the story and basically everything to do with this story. The main reason why it’s my YA fantasy recommendation is that of how diverse the group of characters are and how each of them plays a completely different part of the plotline and book. It’s one of my favourite things. Especially as they are each well rounded and rich.
I also love the motives for everything in this book, and the fact that they are dubious, to begin with! I just think the heist in which this book surrounds is one of my favourites of all time. I was really surprised by how much I loved this book, especially as I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Grisha series, so I’m here to tell you, do NOT write this book off if you weren’t convinced by that series. These are leagues apart in quality.
This YA fantasy recommendation would not be complete without mentioning the wonder that is Kaz Brekker, he may just be my favourite character in the entire world! There’s a lot of sass as well as a sense of vulnerability, the perfect mixture for a badass gang leader, running an impossible heist. Plus wherever Kaz goes Inej follows, and she makes my heart swell, in a I-would-be-terrified-if-I-ever-met-you kinda way.
So pick up this book if you want something magically but with a certain amount of rough and tumble added in. I don’t think I could recommend a better book than this for fantasy readers.
Have you read The Final Empire? Would it be your pick for a fantasy recommendation? Let me know in the comments!
