Series: Hercule Poirot #13
Also in this series: The Mysterious Affair at Styles
Published by Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers
When Alice Ascher is murdered in Andover, Hercule Poirot is already on to the clues. Alphabetically speaking, it's one down, twenty-five to go.
There's a serial killer on the loose. His macabre calling card is to leave the ABC Railway guide beside each victim's body. But if A is for Alice Asher, bludgeoned to death in Andover; and B is for Betty Bernard, strangled with her belt on the beach at Bexhill; then who will Victim C be?
I know I say this about all of the Poirot books and I’m going to say it again, but I think The A.B.C Murders is my favourite so far. I think the fact that there is SO much happening in this book that you genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen. Plus at one point it genuinely looks like Poirot is going to be outsmarted which is unbelievably rare but is a nice view into how he deals with almost failure. I think that’s what makes this book different from the others because you can see the frustration and anger running through Poirot’s mind.
This is the first book that deals with a serial killer and I think the method of communication with the police was really clever. I thought the use of letters and places was a really good way to create a lot of movement in The A.B.C Murders, which was something really different in comparison to the other stories where everything can feel a little static in terms of setting. I thought also the cooperation with the police and the way they worked together to find the murderer was really well written. I think this was my favourite interaction with the police in any of the books.
The best bit for me in The A.B.C Murders was the reveal of who the murderer is. For the first
I think this series is one that I’m always going to recommend, I really enjoy listening to them and desperately trying to figure out who did it. Especially if you’re into crime and are looking for something new and refreshing. This would definitely be on my list!
