Half Bad | Book Review

Wanted by no one.
Hunted by everyone.

Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late. But how can Nathan find his father when there is no one safe to trust, not even family, not even the girl he loves?

Overall

I thought Half Bad was a great beginning to the series. The characters were interesting and the story seemed to have a strong arc going for it. I loved learning about the world and the way the politics worked within the world.

It becomes really obvious the flaws in the system and it was interesting to see them develop and become a greater part of the story.

Story/Plot

Out of all three books, Half Bad has the strongest plot and story. It was the one which had to introduce all of the different aspects of the world and characters. It does it exceptionally well. The story is well constructed, it’s fast paced and at certain points completely thrilling.

The story and plot drew me in totally. It was what made me want to read the entirety of the series. It did its job well.

Characters

There some really well-developed characters in Half Bad. They each have very distinctive personalities and they each bring their own merits to the story.

Nathan

The hero of the story. Nathan is a Half-Code who is questioned constantly by the Council of White Witches. He is the enigma in the story, not only is he Half-White and Half-Black, his father is a murderous Black Witch.

Nathan’s character goes through struggles that would be typical of anyone dealing with two completely opposite personality traits threatening to take over. He really makes me laugh at some points, and others he becomes the angst-ridden teenager you would expect.

Annalise

The perfect pure white witch, with the golden hair and blue eyes. Annalise is the person that Nathan falls in love with, the problem being that she is from a long line of white witches making their relationship basically impossible.

I thought that Annalise was an interesting character. I thought that she highlighted the differences in the two groups really well. It was an interesting dynamic to see them together, it brought a lot to the story. There was definitely a lot of foreshadowing in their friendship for the later books, which made it all the more interesting.

Gabriel

I don’t have enough words to describe my complete love for Gabriel. He is a black witch who has been permanently disguised as a fain. His story was interesting and enjoyable.

He is the one character in Half Bad that I totally loved and cared about. For me, he didn’t have a flaw, and that was what I loved. The loyalty to Nathan plus the way their friendship blossomed makes for a good dynamic. I just adored reading about him, it made the whole book worthwhile.

Would I recommend it?

Oh yeah. Brilliant start to a series, brilliant characters and brilliant plot line. Definitely, pick it up.
