The Big Four | 4 star review
Series: Hercule Poirot #5
Also in this series: The Mysterious Affair at Styles
Published by HarperCollins
Framed in the doorway of Poirot's bedroom stood an uninvited guest, coated from head to foot in dust. The man's gaunt face stared for a moment, then he swayed and fell.
Who was he? Was he suffering from shock or just exhaustion? Above all, what was the significance of the figure 4, scribbled over and over again on a sheet of paper? Poirot finds himself plunged into a world of international intrigue, risking his life to uncover the truth about 'Number Four'.
When I originally picked The Big Four to listen to I read some of the reviews and there seemed to be a general dislike for the storyline, with many believing it to be too fanciful and dramatic. I have to say I disagree, I really loved the way the story moved and adapted, plus Hastings was back which was a great addition to the story.
I think the best thing about The Big Four would definitely have to be the way that the story twisted and turned. I think the way that The Big Four was always one step ahead of Poirot and Hastings. It was a completely different dynamic, and it made for a great change and I think that’s what made me love this story all the more, it was great that the story wasn’t as straightforward as the others.
I also think that this book allowed for more character development and a more in-depth knowledge of each of them, especially Poirot. I thought the way that he obsessed over the case and the different criminals showed more about him as a person then any of the other books have and did.
Plus the ending was one of the best and the way everything worked out in the end, was a really interesting read. One of my favourites actually. I definitely didn’t see the ending coming and I still hadn’t figured out how it was all going to pan out. They’re the kind of stories I love, the ones that keep me guessing, especially ones that I still don’t know what to think.
I think this series is quickly becoming a fast favourite. I’m loving the stories and the way that everything seems to work together. I will be recommending these to all of my friends and make sure they read them!
Let me know what your thoughts are on the Poirot series, I would love to know!
