A Song of Ice and Fire – Final Thoughts | Blogmas Day 15

I can finally say it, I have managed to read the entire published A Song of Ice and Fire series and I can finally cross it off my personal reading challenge list. There were moments where I questioned whether or not I was going to make it. Or even if I wanted to if I’m honest. This isn’t the easiest of series to get through. In fact it was one of the worst to get through, not for any other reason than the fact it was so damn long. Haha, trying to keep a track of character storylines and what was happening in the different places was the hardest part of it all.

I thought I would give you a run down of the books I loved the most and the books I could have done without. Then I thought I would go through my favourite characters and why. I hope this is going to be spoiler free, but there might be a few moments that could be seen as a little spoilery. So warning here and now!

Favourite books in A Song of Ice and Fire

A Dance With Dragons

I’m counting the two parts in this. This was by far my favourite book of the entire series. This was where everything began to happen and it was where for me the characters began to shine through. It was one of the longest but it was well paced and there weren’t any slow moments that left me wanting to put it down or give up. I could easily keep up with what was happening in each character’s life story and it was a breath of fresh air not to have to keep up with eight hundred characters and what they were doing.

A Game of Thrones

The first one is always the best in a series in my experience and this one is no exception. I found that this one drew me in. It kept me captive in the world and made me want to read the others. The introductions to the main characters were written in such a way that made it an easy read. By the time I had finished it I knew which characters I was rooting for and which ones I just couldn’t be bothered with.

Least favourite books in A Song of Ice and Fire

Feast for Crows

I don’t think this book was necessarily bad, it just wasn’t the greatest. In fact it took me almost three weeks to read because it was just so slow. There seemed to be a lot supposed to be happening but there was a lot more faff and explanation than I needed. It was too much at times. I almost gave up on the rest of the series because of this one book.

Favourite characters

Tyrion

He has been a favourite throughout. There has never been a moment where I haven’t found him interested or funny. He is a well written character, with some great one liners and a fantastic storyline. There is so much going on, I just couldn’t help falling in love with all the things he’s done.

All of the Starks

I have to say that no matter the Stark I love them, or come to love them, either one. I think that as one the main families in the books they were interesting and they always had the best of the storylines. Plus their development is some of the greatest, I think they are the only family to go through such dramatic growth and change as a whole.

Least favourite characters in A Song of Ice and Fire

Bran

I hate his whinging and whining inner monologues. Plus I hate his storyline. I hate the way he treats those around him. He is an awful character and an awful person. He’s boring and he really irritates me. I don’t know whether I’m the only one but I struggle reading his POV.

Overall opinion of A Song of Ice and Fire

I loved this series, I can’t wait for the next one to come out, who knows when that’ll be, but I wait with baited breath. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who struggles with long series or super complex series because it would just go straight over your head. There’s no enjoyment in that.
