The Last Ten Books I Abandoned | Top Ten Tuesday

I try not to DNF books, I have gotten better at choosing books that I think will be a success rather than picking books up just because of the hype. But there have been a few over the last couple of months that I have managed to unhaul and finally drawn a line under.

  • No Fences in Alaska | I really didn’t love this book, the way that sex and underage rape is dealt with in this book left me DNF’ng it with less than 10% read.
  • Hidden Figures| This one was a tough one to DNF but I hated the way this one was set out, it was SO dry and the timeline wasn’t well done and I had no attachment to the story or the people.
  • The Jane Austen Book Club | I don’t know how boring a book can be! I really didn’t connect with the characters and I didn’t love the analysis of the different books. It was just a boring books.
  • Gone series| I read Gone and although I didn’t completely hate it, I think I am over the dystopian YA books. They all seem to follow the same patterns and have the same kind of characters.
  • Legend series| This is another series that I started a long time ago but I have never picked up again. I recently unhauled this entire series because I knew I was never going to pick it up again.
  • Wicked| I have tried so many times to read Wicked because I LOVE the musical SO much but this book is so wordy and boring that there was no getting through it all.
  • The Iliad | I gave up trying to get through this one. I think this will be a case of finding the right version for me. I am listening to Mythos so I do really love the Greek myths.
  • Angelfall | Another series that I started a really long time ago and never picked up again. I think I unhauled this one purely because it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore.
  • Wunderkids | I read this one and I wasn’t a massive fan of the book and the way the story went so I won’t be continuing on with this series.
  • Call the Midwife | I struggle with this one because I really enjoy the TV show but for some reason, the books didn’t hit me as hard and after reading the first one I don’t think I’ll be reading the others.

Have you unhauled any of these? Or are there any on this list that I should keep around? Let me know.

  1. I DNFed Hidden Figures too. Which really made me sad, because I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie, and although I DNFed the book I still haven’t watched the movie yet.

    1. I was really sad about DNF’ng it as well purely because I was so interested in the story but god it was boring and so hard to keep track off.

I wanted to watch the movie as well. I might give it a try tonight.

  2. Ah! I felt the exact same way about Wicked! One of those times where the musical is better than the book …

    1. Totally agree! I don’t think I managed to get to the first chapter which was a shame!

  3. I haven’t tried reading Hidden Figures, but I know what you mean about the style. Some nonfiction books just work better as movies and I think this might be one, despite what it loses to creative license. Hopefully now that the story is more publicized, there are alternate offerings in the future.

I gave up on the Gone series after the first book. All those not-that-exciting pages just to get to a cliffhanger? Nope, not doing that again.

Lastly, I read Wicked before I knew there was a musical, and I appreciated the story then but now that I know there is an upgrade version, I can’t see myself ever going back.

    1. Hidden Figures was such a disappointment. I still need to watch the movie, I was giving myself a moment to get over the disappointment haha.

Yeah, I can’t see myself ever reading Gone or any of those books ever again.

I love the musical, but the book was SO dry and boring.

      Thanks for stopping by! <3

  4. So… about Wicked… I didn’t care for the musical that much; I thought the songs were forgettable, but the production was stunning. Anyway, I did try to read the book and it was SO complex and SO disjointed and SO detailed that I had no idea what was going on, who was where and what they wanted. So… although I didn’t put this one on my list, I’m with you on it totally.

    1. I don’t think I got past the first chapter unfortunately which is something I don’t feel guilty about.

    1. Yeah it was less than 3% and I didn’t really care how it was going to grow from there! Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I had the Jane Austen Book Club on my Goodreads TBR for years now without ever looking at the reviews until earlier this year and I saw a lot of negative ones, so it went bye-bye. Which is too bad coz I remember enjoying the movie (and I love Austen)!

  6. I feel you on the Jane Austen Book Club front… so boring! And I feel like every musical fan experiences the same disappointment with Wicked as a novel. 🙂 Hope you’ve been able to read bigger and better things by DNFing these ones!

    1. Thank you! I hope so too! I have great plans for the rest of 2020, so I’m hoping to read some really awesome books.

  7. I hadn’t heard of No Fences in Alaska until now but thanks for the heads up! Ooh, I go back and forth between wanting to read Wicked because I love The Wizard of Oz but I haven’t seen the musical of Wicked, so I’m never sure about it.

    1. I love Wicked the musical but absolutely despise the book. I would stay away if I were you!

    1. I read the first and I just haven’t ever picked the other ones up. I don’t think I ever will now though!

  8. I’ve heard a lot about the Jane Austen Book Club so I’m surprised that you found it boring. But I’m SO SAD THAT YOU DNFED LEGEND *makes confusing wild gestures* That series is so good.
I’m with you on Angelfall, though. I abandoned that too.

    1. Ahh, I started Legend but lost interest. I might pick it up again if it comes up on sale on the Amazon kindle store!

  9. I’ve read Wicked, Hidden Figures, The Iliad (a long time ago!) and Call the Midwife. I think they are all in the realm of “if it doesn’t work for you, don’t push it” — except possibly if you want to go back to mythic originals, you may want to read Homer.

Lately there have been books I’ve had a hard time finishing. I just don’t want to waste time on something I”m not enjoying.

    1. Yeah I might need to try The Iliad again, just haven’t given it another chance! I’m the same, I have far too many books I want to read for me to waste time on ones that I don’t like or enjoy
