Roger Ackroyd was a man who knew too much.

He knew the woman he loved had poisoned her first husband. He knew someone was blackmailing her ― and now he knew she had taken her own life with a drug overdose.

Soon the evening post would let him know who the mystery blackmailer was. But Ackroyd was dead before he'd finished reading it ― stabbed through the neck where he sat in his study...

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is not the first Poirot book I have read check out my reviews here, here and here for the others!

I had heard that if I only read one Poirot then it should be The Murder of Roger Ackroyd would be. I never really believed it and I’m not really sure I can pass judgement on that until I’ve read the others. But I have to say I enjoyed this book a lot.

I don’t want to say an awful lot about what makes this story so great because I don’t want to give too much away, and ruin it all. But I have to say I couldn’t believe the ending I really didn’t see it coming and the reveal were amazing. It has to be one of my favourite reveal of all the Poirot books I have read or listened to.

I think the way that the story of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is constructed is the true beauty of this story, the number of red herrings and the way the clues are interspersed throughout the book is amazing. You get to the ending, look back over what has happened and think how the hell did I not see that coming?

I definitely loved the small town nature of the story and the idea that everyone knows everyone’s business, the gossip circles and the whispering ladies. Although this is set in the 1900s it’s not hard to imagine the gossip and the stories happening now. It was a really relatable part of the story.

I have so much I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to give anything away – trust me to want to keep a hundred-year-old book spoiler free BUT it isn’t my place to ruin anything!

I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who loves crime or is wanting to get into the Poirot stories! I loved the whole way this book set itself up.

Have you ever had a book so completely live up to your expectations? Let me know in the comments!
