Historical Fiction Recommendation #1 : The Bronze Horseman

I adore historical fiction but it’s such a vast genre that it can be a bit of a minefield to try and navigate through and I struggled to find my groove – working out what you like is a huge part of this process. I love WWII and Russian history so books which contain something like that was more likely to be a win for me. So onto my first historical fiction recommendation and surprise surprise, it’s based in WWII.

The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana—and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects—a secret as devastating as the war itself—as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

This book is addictive – there is a crazy love story and some of it is definitely adult so just be aware of that. But the characters and the crap this family goes through will have you sobbing, I mean really sobbing, hence why it’s my first historical fiction recommendation. I mean it’s based in one of the worst times in WWII for the Russian people so you can imagine. I flew through these books and I was hooked, I wanted to know more and love them more.

I think what I love about this book is that it happens to real people, going about their day, there is no sugar coating what you read is what happened, scars and all, it really is a harrowing tale when you remove the lovey-dovey stuff – in fact the romance seems to feed of the awfulness and makes you feel more for the characters. I swear my heart was in my mouth for the majority of this book!

If you love romance and the tragedy of war then this is definitely the book for you. There aren’t words to explain how wonderfully written this book is. Please go and pick it up! You won’t regret it I promise. I hope you enjoyed my first historical fiction recommendation.
